Fine Jewelry Care Guidelines

Store your jewelry in a clean, dry place.

A fabric-lined case is the best home for your treasured jewelry pieces. A great example of this is the wooden jewelry box and soft-velvet cloth wrapping your jewelry arrived to you in! To prevent tangling or scratching, store each piece separately. An enclosed case is ideal for limiting exposure to air moisture and preserving the beauty of your jewelry. Exposure to dust or dirt can tarnish or dull your piece over time.

Protect your jewelry from all chemicals.

Gemstones, crystals, and precious metals can be sensitive to chemical exposure, each in unique ways. Common everyday chemicals include makeup, hairspray, perfume, cologne, lotion, soap, body spray, chlorine, isopropyl alcohol, water (yes, even water!), and salt water.

Water is known as the universal solvent and, over time, it will wear down crystals, gemstones, metals, and knotted or woven cord settings. This results in loss of shine and luster, and in severe cases, can lead to breakage or fracturing. Soft stones, like Amber, are particularly sensitive and can develop chemical burns or scarring just from regular exposure to perfume.

To extend the life of your jewelry, keep it away from water and chemicals whenever possible.

You are the best cleaner for your jewelry.

The natural oils on your skin help to preserve your jewelry. Feel free to wear, enjoy, and handle your piece often! After wearing, gently wipe it with the velvet cloth provided and store it as recommended.

Note: I do not recommend ultrasonic or chemical cleaning for any of my pieces, as these methods can damage both the gemstones and their settings.

Caring for Specific Gemstones and Metals.

Certain gemstones and metals require special care based on their hardness, sensitivity to scratches, or reaction to chemicals.

If your jewelry piece includes gemstones that need specific handling, personalized care instructions will be included as handwritten notes on the Fine Jewelry Care Guidelines card that accompanies your order.

Avoid Impact and Physical Stress.

Fine jewelry can be vulnerable to physical damage if subjected to rough handling or impact. Always remove your jewelry before engaging in activities that may cause shocks or accidental drops, such as sports, heavy lifting, or even simple tasks like gardening. Impact can cause gemstones to crack or settings to loosen. Treat your jewelry with care to preserve its structural integrity and visual appeal.

When in doubt, leave it out.

If you’re uncertain about wearing your jewelry during a specific activity, it’s best to take it off and store it safely. This can save your piece from issues like excessive dirt, sweat, shocks, drops, and other potential damage.

Examples of activities to avoid while wearing fine jewelry include gardening, workouts, running, household cleaning, extensive cooking, swimming, hot tubs, spas, sports, amusement rides, using machinery or power tools, sleeping, and spending a day at the beach.

Use your intuition and discretion to determine when it’s best to remove your jewelry.

If it’s too much sun for your skin, it’s too much sun for your gems.

As deep earth treasures, many gemstones and crystals can fade or bleach under prolonged exposure to the sun’s UV rays. However, don’t be afraid to wear your jewelry on a sunny day!

As a rule of thumb: if the environment is too hot or harsh for your skin (e.g., the dashboard of a car on a hot summer day), it’s also too much for your gems, crystals, and fossils.

Be Mindful of Extreme Temperature Changes.

Sudden temperature changes, such as those experienced when moving between hot and cold environments, can cause stress on gemstones and metals. For example, placing jewelry in extremely hot or cold water may cause cracking or brittleness in certain stones. If possible, avoid exposing your pieces to extreme temperatures for extended periods.

Storing Jewelry During Travel.

When traveling, it’s essential to protect your fine jewelry from potential damage or loss. Store your pieces securely in a travel case with individual compartments for each item to avoid tangling or scratching. If possible, carry your jewelry with you in your carry-on bag rather than checking it in luggage. Keeping jewelry in a soft pouch or protective cloth will help minimize exposure to rough handling or sharp objects.

Properly Secure Your Jewelry for Daily Wear.

If your jewelry features a clasp or closure mechanism, ensure it is securely fastened before wearing to prevent accidental loss or dropping. Many talisman necklace designs are lariats, which can be worn in different configurations, so take extra care to adjust them comfortably and securely.

Regularly check your piece for any signs of wear, such as weak links or clasps, and address any concerns promptly.
